I recently went to a small chapel that is literally across the street from my building. It is a welcoming place, with white walls and a very sober atmosphere, with a wooden roof. The austerity is broken only by the colored light of the stained glass windows. On this day, in particular, there was a celebration of the patron saint and after having lived on the street for more than a decade I thought it was time to check it out.

When I arrived, the place was practically full, but there were still some seats on extra benches placed along the side walls. I adjusted myself as best I could and, despite the need to keep my back straight in a seat without backrest, everything was going well, until a woman stood between me and the extra bench in front, blocking my view of the altar. Without seeming embarrassed, she turned to me and asked: “Do I get in the way?”

I thought it would be a sin to tell a lie in a church and I answered sincerely (taking care to embellish my words with a smile): “It does get in the way, because you are blocking my vision.”

She pretended to move to the side, which meant being right in the middle of the path and, as it would obviously be impossible to remain there, she returned to her starting point, that is, blocking my view. As, at that point, the mass had already started, I resignedly accepted her lack of politeness and thought I might turn my neck a little.

However, I was not prepared for the addiction of my vision to her cell phone. very thirty seconds, like clockwork, she would sneak a peek at the screen. Then, as if that was not enough, she would whip out her glasses from her bag just to read her messages better.

There is no way to dodge that distraction with a mere neck twist, so, once again, I had to muster up the courage to say, “Could you please stash your phone away? I am trying to focus on the Mass” And guess what? She gave me a death glare (yes, in the middle of mass!) and put down her phone, for the most part anyway.

Although much of the sublime experience of the divine was profoundly ruined by this setback, it also gave me a chance to think about the terrible contemporary inability to remain still, and even more so, silent.

In the realm of aesthetics and philosophy, silence often serves as a gateway to the experience of the sublime. Within this context, silence is not merely the absence of noise, but rather a profound and intentional act of creating space for contemplation and introspection. It allows individuals to connect with their inner selves, enabling a heightened awareness of beauty, truth, and the ineffable aspects of existence.

In embracing silence, we not only gain access to a profound form of expression that transcends verbal communication but also open ourselves to the vast realm of introspection and self-discovery. Silence carries the power to convey emotions, thoughts, and intentions in a way that words often fall short of. It allows us to communicate on a deeper, more authentic level, fostering a connection that goes beyond the limitations of speech.

Through the stillness of silence, we can truly listen to our innermost thoughts and feelings, and in turn, understand ourselves and others more fully. This practice can lead to a heightened sense of empathy and a greater understanding of the complexities of human emotions. Embracing silence can be a transformative experience, enriching our lives and relationships in ways that verbal communication alone cannot achieve.

This paves the way for a deeper understanding of the perception experience, creating a sense of awe and transcendence.

In many ways, silence can be seen as a canvas upon which the sublime is painted, as it provides the necessary space for the mind to grapple with the profound and overwhelming nature of the sublime. At the same time, the sublime can also be thought of as a kind of metaphorical silence, representing a moment of profound stillness and overwhelming grandeur that transcends the limitations of language and human expression.

And the lady in front of me lost all of this. What a waste!

Mulholland Dr.ive is a 2001 film written and directed by David Lynch. In this intriguing work, a scene that has become iconic is that of the protagonists Betty and Rita at “Club Silencio” (love the name!): it starts with the master of ceremonies explains that everything is an illusion (there is no band, and yet we hear a band). The women soon cry to the sound of the Spanish version of “Crying” by Rebekah del Rio. The artist faints, but the singing continues, revealing that the audio is a playback recording.

I could not help thinking of this scene so full of meanings, while watching on tv to the recent performance of popstar Madonna in Rio de Janeiro, in a mega show for over 1,5 million people on the Copacabana beach.

The magnitude of the show was undeniable. From the dedicated members of her team to the remarkable audience numbers for the live broadcast, every aspect of the event was larger than life. Even the undertaking of cleaning up the Copacabana beach after the concert was colossal, highlighting the immense scale of the production.

All the figures surrounding the presentation are gigantic, except one, which, by the way, is zero: the number of musicians on stage.

Such nonsense, in addition to the fact that the vocals themselves are based on pre-recorded bases, made me think about how a performance like this cannot be considered, strictly speaking, a concert. After all, what is the place of music in pop?

When considering the performance, technology, and the perception of musical artistry within the realm of pop music, it is important to acknowledge the dynamic interplay between these elements. The evolution of technology has not only revolutionized the way music is produced and consumed, but it has also significantly impacted the performance aspect of pop music.

Advances in audio recording, digital effects, and electronic instruments have provided artists with unprecedented creative tools, allowing them to push the boundaries of their artistry. From the use of Auto-Tune to enhance vocal performances, to the incorporation of electronic instruments and samples in live shows, technology has become an integral part of pop music, raising questions about the authenticity and artistry of these performances.

It is disheartening to witness major international pop stars, Madonna being just one example among many, dismissing musicians during their world tours. This behavior raises questions about fair treatment and respect within the music industry. When artists who have reached the pinnacle of success neglect their supporting musicians, it is, well, disappointing, to say the least.

Maybe it is about time we start giving classical music some more love. I have always been impressed by how this genre manages to evolve while still holding onto its core essence. I mean, imagine shelling out to watch an opera, only to find out that the lead soprano is lip-syncing to pre-recorded tracks? That would be a real scandal, right? So why do we naturalize it in current pop?

I’m aware that it’s difficult to make such criticisms without sounding extremely old-fashioned, but I’m willing to take the risk. After all, I also find some things very old-fashioned, for example, hypersexualized performances. I know that the saying “sex sells” dictates the rules, but I also know that at this point in time, such performances seem more boring than revolutionary. It is all so repetitive!

Do you know what would be revolutionary now? a performance less polluted by stage elements and complicated choreography, based on the artists’ talent and ability to perform live on stage. In short, entertainment that actually entertains, instead of just distracting.

Returning to talent-focused entertainment can have a profound impact on the industry, emphasizing skill and artistry over other superficial qualities. Embracing talent-focused entertainment can lead to a resurgence of genuine artistry, captivating audiences with the sheer brilliance and passion of performers.

In a world saturated with manufactured personas, placing talent at the forefront can breathe new life into the industry, offering audiences an authentic and awe-inspiring entertainment experience.

What is your favourite superhero power? Which one would you like to have yourself? Are you sure you could live with it? Let me tell you something: Despite being exciting and awe-inspiring in fiction, superpowers might be incredibly challenging to manage in everyday life. And I really should know, because I have a superpower myself, true story.

Oh, I never told you about it? Well, I do. I have super senses. Well, at least some. Definitely the hearing. So, when the doctor asked for an audiometry to try to find the reason for my increasingly frequent sinusitis, I thought: “Okay, but I am sure it will not help us in this case”.

Obediently, I strolled in for my audiometry test. And guess what? The verdict: even better than last time! The doc was all impressed, but before you accuse me of bragging, let me assure you, having super hearing does not make my life easier and neither make me immune to pesky sinusitis attacks! Oh, the little ironies of life!

Having heightened hearing abilities can be both a blessing and a curse. In fact, they may introduce their own set of unique struggles: while it is fascinating to pick up on even the faintest of sounds, it also means being constantly bombarded with the cacophony of everyday life. The hum of electricity, the rustle of leaves, the distant chatter of people – they all merge into an overwhelming symphony that never seems to fade.

Ah, the delightful paradox of possessing extraordinary abilities while being surrounded by ordinary adversities! In my case, the greatest obstacle happens to be my cacophonous, off-key neighbors. I cannot help but ponder whether this is an unavoidable prerequisite for renting a space in this building. I mean, what are the chances of every single neighbor lacking the ability to hit a single note? It is a true symphony of disharmony indeed!

I am quite aware of the fact that musicians, bless their hearts, seem to have developed a bit of a reputation for being rather stubborn when it comes to the playlists of other people. They can be quite particular about what they consider “good music,” and they have a knack for unearthing tracks from the deepest, darkest corners of the musical world. I wonder if this is why I feel so personally affected the bad musical taste of my neighbors and their irritating inability to sing.

Or, perhaps, the reason comes from something else, immensely more harmful to our life in community than being out of tune: our increasing incapacicity to truly listen the inability to listen, whether to others or to oneself. In many instances, the inability to tune in and listen attentively stems from a place much more detrimental to our collective existence than the mere music taste related discordance.

The inability to truly listen, whether directed towards others or ourselves, can initiate a cascade of miscommunication, hindering the cultivation of empathy, genuine understanding, and meaningful connections. This inability to listen attentively often goes unnoticed, yet its effects can be profound. In a world where everyone is eager to speak and be heard, the lost art of genuine listening has become increasingly rare.

When we fail to truly listen, we miss out on the nuances of communication, which are often more important than the words themselves. We miss the opportunity to truly understand the perspectives, emotions, and the experiences of others, usually paving the way for conflict, creating barriers between individuals and within communities.

On the other hand, the act of authentic listening can foster empathy, trust, and a deep sense of connection. It allows us to grasp the underlying emotions and intentions behind the words, leading to meaningful and fulfilling interactions. In an age where technology has made communication faster and more convenient, the value of genuine, attentive listening cannot be overstated.

In cultivating the skill of listening, we not only enhance our personal relationships but also contribute to the well-being of the larger community. Meaningful connections and a sense of belonging are crucial for the emotional and psychological health of individuals and communities alike.

It is crucial to recognize that the art of listening extends beyond the physical act of hearing; it encompasses the willingness to understand, empathize, and absorb the perspectives and experiences of those around us. When we neglect this vital skill, we risk perpetuating a cycle of discord, misinterpretation, and division. Therefore, nurturing the capacity to listen intently and empathetically is pivotal in fostering a more inlcusive, understanding society.

By making a conscious effort to listen with genuine interest and empathy, we can build bridges and earn the confidence, whether that of your neighbors or your audience. Moreover, developing the skill of active listening with true sincerity and understanding lays the foundation for meaningful connections and trust, where mutual respect and openness can thrive.

The ability to truly pay attention to what others say is a skill that can greatly enrich personal relationships. It demonstrates respect, empathy, and a willingness to understand and connect with others on a deeper level. This quality is not only important in personal relationships, though. It also plays a crucial role in the relationship between an artist and their audience.

For an artist, being able to connect with their audience is a sine qua non quality, an essential element that can make or break their success. When an artist is able to engage with their audience in a way that resonates with both parties, it creates a powerful and meaningful connection that elevates the performance and the experience of the audience.

The act of truly listening – to your inner voice, to the stories and emotions that surround you, to the experiences of others – can profoundly enrich your creative expression and it is a powerful tool for every artist. Deep listening allows you to absorb the nuances and complexities of the world, infusing your art with authenticity and depth.

Genuinely responding to your artistic endeavors means staying true to your vision and expressing it in a way that resonates with your audience. it can be a transformative factor in both your personal relationships and your artistic journey.

Francisco de Morais Alves, better known as Francisco Alves, Chico Alves or Chico Viola (Rio de Janeiro, August 19, 1898 — Pindamonhangaba, September 27, 1952) is considered one of the greatest, most popular and versatile Brazilian singers. Nicknamed “King of the Voice” by radio host César Ladeira, Alves is a decisive figure in the construction of several popular genres of Brazilian music in the first half of the 20th century.

In addition to his vocal competence and appeal to the public, Francisco Alves also had a reputation for having a good eye for discovering songs that would be new hits. In this sense, he was considered infallible by his colleagues. However, the “infallible” man made a mistake, at least once, when choosing his repertoire and, ironically, he failed to choose for himself a theme that is usually present in lists of the most beautiful sambas of all time.

Agora É Cinza” (“Only Ashes Now’, in a free translation), was first offered by the composer duo Bide and Marçal to the singer Mário Reis, along with another composition by the duo, the samba “Vivo Sonhando”. Mário wanted to do a kindness to his colleague, of whom he was a deep admirer. Well, the “infallible” Francisco Alves chose “Vivo Sonhando” and Mário Reis recorded the remaining song, “Agora é Cinza”, with an arrangement by the great master Pixinguinha, which became a classic, while Alves’ recording did not achieve much success and is rarely remembered by his fans.

It is quite intriguing to delve into the decisions and circumstances that can lead even a celebrated figure like Francisco Alves to miss out on what later became an iconic samba. The complex interplay of personal relationships, artistic choices, and timing in the world of music often yields unexpected outcomes.

This anecdote serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable nature of the music industry and the countless variables that can shape the fate of a particular recording. It highlights how even the most skilled and discerning individuals may encounter moments where their judgment falters.

The tale also underscores the intricate interplay of talent, timing, and luck in the world of music, where success and obscurity can hinge on a myriad of factors. The inherent unpredictability and complexity of the music landscape, may turn even the most promising endeavors into unexpected hurdles, while seemingly overlooked creations may rise to acclaim.

Feelings of frustration and disappointment when things do not go as planned are common to all of us. It is especially tough when we invest a lot of time and effort into something and do not see the desired results. It can feel like a wasted opportunity, and we fear that the dreams and ideas that we had may not come to fruition.

It is also easy to fall into the trap of believing that we are the only ones making mistakes, that “others” are always successful. However, it is important to remind ourselves that even the most skilled individuals experience setbacks. This perspective can provide a sense of solace and motivation to keep going, knowing that it’s all part of the journey to success.

It is natural for us to face obstacles and make mistakes along the way. Just like even the most proficient archers miss the target, from time to time.

This is the ninth part of a series of articles on the relationship between jazz and comic books. Go to Part 1 , Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7 or Part 8

In this segment we will focus on two works, which illustrate the intrinsic relationship between comic books and jazz. The first one is the groundbreaking album The Epic (2015), by Kamasi Washington, jazz saxophonist, composer, and bandleader. He gained widespread acclaim for his contributions to the album To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar (2015).

The Epic solidified the reputation of Washington as a leading figure in contemporary jaz, known for revitalizing the interest in jazz among younger audiences with his ambitious, expansive compositions. The vinyl edition of the album is truly a captivating experience, designed to immerse the listener in an adventure that unfolds across multiple discs.

Each of the LPs represent a new chapter in the musical journey, accompanied by striking black and white photography that beautifully captures the essence of the Afrocentric free jazz aesthetic embodied by influential labels such as Tribe, Strata, and Black Jazz. This approach not only elevates the auditory experience but also adds a visual dimension to the storytelling woven into the music.

The Epic box set also included an graphic novel-inspired collection of images, exploring the conceptual narrative that underpins the compositions, offering enthusiasts a deeper understanding of the creative vision behind the album.

And The Epic continues to resonate. In recent years, Washington has been working on a graphic novel: “I had a dream [with] a story that encompassed all the songs [on The Epic], which really led me to have the conviction that I was really going to put it out. So I’m creating a graphic novel for that.”

The second graphic novel we would like to highlight is Instrumental (2017), by Dave Chisholm, a tale about the transformative power of music, weaving together themes of passion, struggle, and artistic expression.

The graphic novel “Instrumental” by Dave Chisholm offers a compelling journey into the emotional and creative depths of its characters. Chisholm, recognized as an acclaimed jazz musician, skillfully shines a spotlight on the intricate and profound experiences encountered by the characters within the narrative. Described as a high-spirited, suspenseful, formally inventive, and visually musical masterpiece, “Instrumental” delivers an epic yet intimate exploration of our relentless longing and search for what lies ahead.

The graphic novel intricately weaves together elements of music, storytelling, and artistry to create a truly immersive and captivating reading experience. It includes a download of an original jazz soundtrack, composed and performed by the author Dave Chisholm. As readers delve into the pages of this remarkable work, they are treated to a fusion of visual art and musical composition that enhances and enriches the narrative, resulting in a multidimensional journey.

The inclusion of the original jazz soundtrack not only adds an auditory layer to the reading experience but also serves as a testament of the multifaceted talent of Chisholm. As with the work of Washington, the innovative approach underscores the interconnectedness of commic ast and jazz, offering a one-of-a-kind opportunity to engage with narratives that transcends traditional boundaries.

Both works invite the readers/listeners to experience the power of storytelling through a harmonious convergence of music and visual art.
